Enough of “I don’t want to” or how to overcome your inner resistance

This article explores why we often fail to take action even when we know exactly what needs to be done—and how to overcome the paralyzing “I don’t want to” in order to finally reach our goals.

Petra had a dream.
For years, she had thought about starting a small online business—a shop for sustainable home decor, lovingly designed and fairly produced. She had done her research: taken courses, listened to podcasts, written business plans. Her notebooks were full of ideas.

And yet—nothing happened.

Every time she was about to start, thoughts came up like:
“Work is too stressful right now.”
“I need a better website first.”
“The market is tough at the moment.”
“Maybe next year.”

A thousand reasons why now wasn’t the right time. And while Petra kept planning, she watched others—people with less knowledge—do exactly what she had been dreaming of.

Why others start—while you’re still hesitating

Petra isn’t an exception. On the contrary—she represents many of us. People with dreams, visions, and plans—who even know quite well what they would need to do to move toward their goals. They’ve researched, read, taken courses, written to-do lists. The knowledge is there. The tools are ready. And still—nothing happens.

What’s holding them back isn’t a lack of intelligence. Nor missing skills. It’s not a time problem either.
What’s truly holding them back is something much simpler—but deeper:

The inner resistance to taking the first step.

That quiet, barely audible “I just don’t feel like it right now,” that sometimes shows up as tiredness, and other times as “today just isn’t a good day.” It’s deceptive because it often feels reasonable. But in truth, it’s a mask—and beneath it, you’ll almost always find fear:

  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of what others might say.
  • Fear of not being good enough.
  • Fear of disappointing yourself.

And here’s the paradox:
The longer you wait, the bigger the fear gets.
The more resistance builds up. And the harder it becomes to take that first step.

While you’re still thinking it through, others have stopped planning—they’re taking action. They might stumble, they might make mistakes, but they’re moving forward. And you? You’re still sitting on the couch, feeling unsatisfied, still dreaming about maybe someday. And with each day that passes, the frustration grows—not at the goal, but at yourself.

Because deep down, you know: You could’ve already been on your way.

The truth is: Action creates clarity

Many wait for the moment when they feel ready.
Motivated, clear-headed, full of energy. The perfect day to start.
But that moment rarely comes—and when it does, it’s fleeting.

Because motivation is unreliable.
It shows up when you hear an inspiring podcast or watch a motivational video—but it only sticks around if you get moving.

What really creates clarity is action.
Not endless planning, not more research, not waiting for the perfect time.
Clarity begins the moment you take that first step—even while feeling uncertain.

And suddenly, everything shifts:

  • You move from your head into action.
  • You realize you’re capable.
  • You gain real experience, not just theory.
  • You learn what works—and what doesn’t.

Even if you fail, you’re still ahead of where you were yesterday. You’ve learned something. You’ve shown courage.

Every small step creates momentum.
And momentum is more powerful than motivation.
Because it keeps you going—even on days when you think, “This just isn’t my day.”

The key isn’t doing it perfectly. The key is simply starting. Imperfect. Doubtful. Heart racing. But moving forward.

How to overcome your “I don’t want to”

That “I don’t want to” often feels like a massive wall. But in reality, it’s usually just a small hill—if you learn how to approach it differently. Here are practical strategies to break through the paralysis and take action:

1. Make it so small you can’t say no.
Big mistake: thinking too big.
Instead of: “I’m launching my online business.”
Try: “I’ll spend 10 minutes researching shop systems.”

Shrink your first step to the bare minimum. Not an hour workout—just putting on your sneakers and stepping outside. Your goal isn’t performance—it’s movement.

2. Schedule it like a dentist appointment.
Don’t wait for motivation or inspiration—they rarely show up on time.
Set a fixed time: “Every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., I work on my project for 30 minutes.”

What’s in your calendar becomes real.
That’s how your dream becomes part of your daily life—not just a fantasy in your head.

3. Imagine what it costs you NOT to start.
What do you lose by continuing as you are?
A year of stagnation? Unused potential?
Feel that pain—and use it to drive you forward.

Write this down:
“If I don’t start now, I might be sitting here a year from now, still frustrated—while others are already ahead.”

4. Treat the first step as a test—not a lifelong commitment.
You don’t have to decide now whether your project will work for the next five years.
You just need to try and see what happens when you begin.

Think of your start as an experiment. Curious, light, playful. That takes off the pressure—and makes it easier to just begin.

5. Tell someone about your plan.
Say it out loud. Send a message. Post it if you’re brave.
Accountability matters.

Because the moment you tell someone what you plan to do, your inner driver kicks in—and you’re much more likely to follow through.

6. Celebrate every small success.
Even if you only worked for five minutes—celebrate it.
Because you overcame what usually holds you back.
And that’s worth more than the perfect plan.

Final thought: Start—even if your mind says “Not now.”

Petra now runs her small online shop. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t without doubt. But it was real. And she’s proud—not because everything went smoothly, but because she started. If you know that one thought—“I want to, but now isn’t the right time”—then now is the right time.

No more waiting. No more delaying. No more excuses.

Start—despite the “I don’t want to.”
Because your future doesn’t depend on a perfect plan. It depends on your first step.
